Following the sentencing of Jaskirat Singh Sidhu for his part in the Humboldt Broncos crash of 2018, Crown Prosecutor Thomas Healy spoke to the media. Healy recognized that no sentence could undo the horrific event, but he convey that the Crown was satisfied with the sentence.

Healy began by issuing a statement recognizing the families impacted by the crash, "We would like to acknoweldge the victims, their family members and their friends who came today to hear the sentencing decision. The patience of the victims and their families and their respect for the judicial process has been greatly appreciated."

Acknowledging the complexity of the decision, Healy added, "The court's decision today demonstrates how difficult that job was and highlights the numerous factors the court was required to take into account when reaching its decision. This was a particularly difficult decision as there is no sentencing precedent in Canada for a case like this one."

In the final analysis, Healy expressed the Crown's satisfaction that the decision aligned with the Crown's submissions. He detailed, "The sentence holds Mr. Sidhu accountable for his criminal actions on April 6th. However, we recognize that there is no sentence that can return the victims or their families to where they were before this criminal act took place. The crown trusts that this sentence will send a very strong message to everyone who uses our highways. That message is that criminal driving will not be tolerated."

Healy echoed Judge Inez Cardinal in her pre-sentence address. The consequences of criminal driving actions, regardless of state of mind or intent, "can be catastrophic." The sentence of eight years was specifically designed to send a message of deterrence and denouncement, and to reinforce the message invoked in her delivery: "This must stop."
