Canada Day will see a first-ever baseball showcase come to James Korte Field in Muenster. The venue will host the first Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League All-Star Games on July 1.

Chad Hofmann is the vice-president of the SPBL which includes the best ball players in the 18U and 15U categories in the province. He outlines the pair of games scheduled to take place.

“For a number of years in the SPBL, we’ve talked about the idea of having some type of All-Star Game for our league, but this year will be the first time we actually do this. We are going to have two games – one for first year players born in 2008 at 12 noon. At 3 pm, it will be our players born in the second and third year of the division, 2006 and 2007.”

All teams from the SPBL will be represented in the two team rosters, divided by east and west divisions. Each team will send two players from the respective age categories. The result will be a showcase where competitors get to gel as teammates.

“Some of the players have played in Team Sask programs before, but this will be the first time where they play in a pair of teams split into the two divisions. There are fourteen teams in our league, so seven teams per side. They’ll be wearing their home uniforms on one team and away uniforms on the other.”

SaskTel Max has committed to broadcasting the game at a later time. The game and the broadcast will also provide a great showcase for the community of Muenster and its heart and soul stadium.

“When we discussed it, we wanted to try to spread the game out in terms of location every year. Saskatoon and Regina teams are often the hosts for provincials at this age group, so we want to try getting all our team locations involved. When the executive discussed it, James Korte Field is one of the premier parks in our province, and we are excited to be able to host it here this year.”

A canteen and refreshments will be on the grounds, and admission to the park for the games is free. Nothing better on Canada Day than the smell of the grass and a great afternoon of showcase baseball.
