It’s not Kyle Froelich’s first time in the spotlight and it certainly won’t be his last. Froelich was named Sask Baseball’s Player of the Year for the 18U category. The award was handed out at the Sask Baseball Awards and AGM on Saturday, October 19. Froelich found out about the award in a relayed text message from his family.

Froelich plays for the Muenster Red Sox 18U team as he has for the past couple of years. Froelich got the nod for the best provincial player in 2017 in the 15U category. With family origins in St. Gregor, Froelich feels at home on the squad but has made a serious commitment to the Red Sox having grown up and currently residing in Nipawin. Froelich recalls how he gelled into the team in his 2018 year.

“When I got here, I didn’t know many people, but right away, I got to know the great group of guys. Chad (Hofmann, coach of the U18 Red Sox) was awesome and super welcoming. There’s that next level of ball here. Everybody shared the same goal, to become better ball players, that’s what really got me here.”

The versatile shortstop and pitcher sees the development in his game over the past two years. Working with Logan Hofmann, 2019 St. Louis Cardinals draft pick, Froelich’s confidence and ability grew in key areas.

“We worked on holding baserunners and that was a big difference for me. Then we worked on little mechanical things, making adjustments here and there to become a better player.”

Froelich also had the benefit of hitting coaching with another Red Sox alum drafted to the majors, Cole Baum,l who joined the 18U coaching staff for the 2019 year.

Thanks to his work ethic and love of the game, it’s not beyond the stretch of imagination that Kyle Froelich could join the ranks of other Muenster Red Sox professional draftees.
