The best theatre productions will take the audience on an emotional ride from “slapstick to swordplay." In the case of Spirit! Produced by the Humboldt Theatre Club from Feb. 14-16, the charming comedy masterfully incorporates its own brand of charming comedy and a dramatic and heartfelt turn. The cast brings to life the residents of Happy Hollow Retirement Home, all of whom address their personal challenges with ageing and with the perceptions of those around them.

Much of the play centres around the willful and wily Clara, played by Katherine Draude, who brings a determination and sly wit to the character of the fledgling novelist. Her closest companion is Esther, whose frequent memory lapses inspire both sympathy and comedy. Annette Magus brings a whimsical quality to Esther who proved to be an audience favourite.

Rounding out the principals in the cast are the bubbly and earnest nursing attendant, Arby and the overbearing home administrator Miss Munroe. As Arby, Alanna Bergquist brings to life a bright and supportive character whom the audience roots for. Perhaps the most over the top and outrageous moments of the play belong to Bernadette Reifferscheid as the unyielding Munroe, whose sole purpose is to corral the residents into her idea of retirement life. Reifferscheid rails against illegal poker games, hula dancing lessons, and the evils of meat and onion pizzas.

The cast of supporting characters rely on well-honed timing and a thoughtful script to deliver a light-hearted comic experience combined with a tearful dramatic moment. After a year-long hiatus, The Humboldt Drama Club delivers a welcome performance that delighted its audiences.
