The Trip Out to Humboldt

I first off want to thank you, Humboldt, for making us feel right at home since the moment we arrived in early August. It also isn’t easy uprooting from your home city of 27 years, so the second thank-you to my girlfriend Sam who gives me someone to go home to after work. Without you, this would be impossible.

The journey began bright and early the morning of Aug 6. After finding a furnished place to live here in Humboldt, all that was left was to pack the car, grab the cat and fish (who we almost killed twice by the way, but we’ll save that for the next blog) and hit the road.

I somehow managed to avoid all driving responsibilities for the eight-hour trip, while the music selection was tight in my grips, (How did that happen?, I have no clue.)

After driving for two hours we stopped near Brandon, MB to meet Sam’s dad for a bite to eat and say goodbye. We decided to order a quesadilla to go considering the cat was in the car we didn't have time to eat it there. I will advise everyone right now that a quesadilla is a terrible car-trip food to acquire….but I’m assuming most already knew that.

Meanwhile, as I’m writing this blog my boss comes in to tell me that I’ve been pronouncing the mayor’s name wrong on air the entire morning, pronouncing it like the famous children's book author. So clearly the learning phase is still in effect.

Surprisingly the cat partaking in the trip, which we thought would be 8 hours of meowing torture drowned out by music, was quite calm. The golf clubs, which were a part of the car space casualty cuts, were left behind to make room for a cat bed area which Gordie (the cat) did not use a single time. Now after seeing the beautiful golf course here and the suitable days for golf dwindling down, I realize that was a mistake (not my first choice either).

2 gas fill-ups, 1 snack stop, and a bathroom break later, other than being stuck behind a house being moved down the highway for 20 minutes at a crawling pace, the drive was smooth and we arrived in Humboldt.

Now settled in for a few weeks Sam and I have had some time to experience the wonderful community that is Humboldt, including a quick round at mini golf, (we tied), a few games of bowling (we did not tie), a couple bites to eat at the local establishments and along the way come to love the city and the people who have graciously welcomed us in with open arms. For that Humboldt we thank you.
