A deportation hearing for Jaskirat Singh Sidhu is set for May 24. The trucker convicted in connection with the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018 was sentenced to eight years following pleading guilty to dangerous driving charges.

In an interview reported by CTV, Sidhu’s lawyer Michael Greene characterized the hearing.

“It was an inevitability. I mean, the (Immigration) Minister could always decide not to go ahead with it, but it doesn’t seem to be happening at this point anyway. There’s nothing to contest. You’re convicted or you’re not. All they have to establish is he’s not a citizen and that he was convicted.”

Sidhu is a permanent resident who was newly hired into a trucking position when the accident occurred north of Tisdale at the junction of Highways 35 and 335.

Sidhu’s lawyer was unsuccessful in applications for Sidhu’s case to receive a second review from Canada Border Services in December.

If a deportation order is issued, Sidhu can file an application for reversal based on humanitarian grounds. Greene stated that process would begin immediately following any decision to remove Sidhu.
