Winter weights in place on Saskatchewan highways after delay

The mild weather this fall resulted in the provincial government delaying the start of winter weights on secondary highways. 

Winter weights typically start on November 16 each year, and continue until mid-March, as conditions allow.

This year they came into effect on November 27.

The freezing temperatures strengthen the roadbeds, which allows for additional weights. Generally, winter weights allow up to 15-20 percent more weight for the secondary highways than what can be moved during the summer months.  

Municipal roads are the responsibility of rural municipalities, and they set their own weight limits.  

As the weather changes the provincial government may also remove winter weights in some areas. The winter weight status for roads can be checked by visiting: Saskatchewan.ca/WinterWeights.
