Frank Leo Poelking
July 23, 1928 – October 3, 2020

The death of Mr. Frank Leo Poelking of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, SK, occurred at his residence on Saturday, October 3, 2020. He was 92 years of age. Frank was born on July 23, 1928, to Ferdinand and Anna (nee Stienke) Poelking at St. Gregor. SK. He attended South St. Gregor School, then continued his education at the University of Saskatchewan School of Agriculture in Saskatoon, SK, and then Musker Engineering Institute in Winnipeg, MB, for welding. Frank was also involved with ham radio, and Judo. He achieved a black belt, and then taught Judo in Quill Lake, SK. Frank also became an Oblate of St. Benedict. Frank worked as a welder in Texas and California. After returning to Canada, he began farming in the R.M. of St. Peter. In 1974, Frank married Frances “Frankie” (nee Bergerman) Zietz. They resided in Humboldt and started Little Buckaroo Ranch. Frank and Frankie began to raise and show registered Arabian horses and later, miniature horses, allowing them to travel in Western Canada and around the United States. Highlights of Frank’s life were walking the northern coast of Norway, traveling to Rome and throughout Europe, driving solo to Guatemala and praying at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, visiting Pier 21 in Halifax, NS, to see records of his parents entry to Canada, experiencing Signal Hill, Nfld., and enjoying the silence in a Trappist Monastery. The most important highlight however, was family. Frank is remembered by his wife, Frankie Poelking of Humboldt, SK; her children: Debora Schlosser and family of Medicine Hat, AB; Russ (Mavis “Charlie” Sloan) Zietz and family of Wakefield, PQ; and Penny (Kirk) Yung of Medicine Hat, AB. He is also remembered by nephew, Larry (Debra) and family of St. Gregor, SK; niece, Lynn and family of Calgary, AB; nephew, Les (Nancy) and family of Victoria, BC, nephew, Stephen (Jammeke) and family of Mississauga, ON; godson, Michael of Sacramento, CA; and the numerous friends he met or made on the Road of Life. He was predeceased by his parents, Ferdinand and Anna (nee Stienke) Poelking; two brothers: Joe (Elsie) Poelking, and Ferdinand (Donna) Poelking; and by one sister, Elsie (Ben) Kunz. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, on Thursday, October 8, 2020, at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Abbot Peter Novecosky, OSB. Others taking part were: Bill Bergerman, cross bearer; Denis Bergerman and Noreen Strueby, scripture readers; Charlie Sloan, intentions; and Denise Germain, organist. Pallbearers were Danny Berting, Larry Kunz, Les Poelking, Russel Zietz, Ralph Hofmann, and Hughie Gray. Interment followed at St. Gregory Roman Catholic Cemetery, St. Gregor.
