This weekend is the perfect opportunity to get together with friends and family and fish for free.

Fisheries Program and Policy Specialist Bob Skaftfeld explains the purpose behind free fishing weekend.

"The free fishing weekend here in Saskatchewan is something that the ministry feels is important to give people the opportunity who maybe haven't fished before or to get together with family. It's an inexpensive way to enjoy something with the whole family."

Lake Lenore, St. Brieux, Stoney and Lucien Lake are all local hot spots within minutes from Humboldt. Saskatchewan is one of the most sought after fisheries among anglers abroad as well

Saskatchewan is home to 67 different fish species. 58 of the species are native to Saskatchewan, while the remaining nine species have been introduced to our waters.

Some of the fish that could be caught include the northern pike, walleye, lake trout, arctic grayling, rainbow trout and more.

The free fishing weekend always lines up with National Fishing week.

SaskParks is trying to get more people into fishing this summer with free lessons at some of their provincial parks. Janette Hamilton, the Manager of Visitor Experiences in Saskatchewan Parks explains more.

"We're doing a learn to fish program, this weekend we're kicking off in five of our provincial parks. We will be offering a two hour session, we're providing the equipment and it's free for all of our park visitors."

This weekend, lessons will be taking place at Blackstrap, Buffalo Pound, Echo Valley, and Crooked Lake.
