The World's Largest Free-Standing Mural has now been officially unveiled.

The community of Young celebrated the mural on Saturday with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Over the summer, the mural was erected and stands ten feet off the ground and is 20 feet (6 metres) tall and 80 feet (24 metres) in length.

The mural showcases 32 scenes of farming, local elevators, a mine and other events from the village's history, according to artist Michael Gaudet.

"Everybody in the mural, all the scenes, all the people, are recognizable."

Gaudet says that the mural became free-standing after they didn't want to risk damaging the community's arena.

"The original plan was for us to mount the mural on the side of the rink, facing the highway," explained Gaudet. "It was so massive that we couldn't guarantee the structural integrity of the building."

He added that the original painting was done in 2012.
