The SaskParty Government has reneged on their decision to cut funding to libraries across the province.

In last month's provincial budget they announced a $4.8 million to cut libraries, that was a 58 percent chop to regional facilities such as Humboldt's Reid-Thompson Library.

Reid-Thompson board member and city council representative Sandy Weyland is pleased the Premier caved to the pressure.

"I'm very happy to hear that they decided to restore the funding to the library system," she said after Monday night's council meeting. "I just heard this news but I'm very happy to hear."

Back on April 7th, rallies and "read-ins" took place across the province including right here in Humboldt at Civic Park, Weyland spoke at the event.

"I guess all the petitions and rallies and pressures of everybody coming together to save our libraries helped get this funding restored."

A huge hindrance for concerned residents was the end of the inter-branch lending which essentially gives borrowers three million book offers, without that local residents were restricted to about 500,000 options.

Education Minister Don Morgan says the money could come from a contingency fund in the budget or from other departments within the ministry.
