Anne Chyz (née Franko)
April 6, 1928 – March 6, 2022

Anne Chyz was born on April 6, 1928, at the family farm in the Wimmer/Watson area of Saskatchewan. Times were tough in the early days, but family love soothed the challenges. Her parents were insistent that Anne and her siblings get good educations. After attending Daisy and Watson Schools she went to Saskatoon for her Grade 12 and Normal School, so that she could become a teacher. Anne taught school her whole adult life. Some of the places in the province she taught were Meadow Lake, Kenaston, Mozart, Quill Lake, Clair, and Daisy, then to Geraldton, Ontario, and finally Jedburgh, SK. She met her husband Melvin Chyz, and they were married on July 16, 1952. On May 23, 1954, their son Ken was born. In 1955 Mel sought out employment at a gold mine in Geraldton. The family lived there until 1964 when they returned to Saskatchewan and Mel began a job with the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool at Jedburgh. Anne began teaching at the hamlet’s two-room school and remained the teacher there until 1985, when she retired from her beloved teaching career. On March 8, 1978, Anne was blessed with her grandson Blair and on December 3, 2002, with a great-grandson Dreyden. Anne loved curling. She was an avid participant and later in life when curling was on television everything else came to a stop so that she could watch. Anne also loved playing cards and going to the casino. She would play cards three times a week at the senior citizen’s centre in Yorkton. Joe or Monica would always provide her with a ride. She loved to go on casino bus trips that her son Ken organized. She had a regular room mate Mary Lazurko and as Mary has said, “Things are just not the same without her there.” Anne was predeceased by her husband Melvin; parents Nick and Mary Franko (née Badduke); brothers: Bill, Steve, Joe, and Eugene; sister Sophie Soubolsky; in-laws: Theresa, Peggy, and Shirley Franko, Steve Soubolsky, Bill and Shirley Chyz, Bob and Alice Chyz, Ron Chyz, and nephews: Bob Soubolsky, Greg Franko and Greg Chyz. Anne leaves to mourn: her son Ken (Sylvia); grandson Blair (Falicia), and great-grandson Dreyden (Maddie); sisters-in-law Lillian Franko and Vickie Chyz; as well as several nieces and nephews, and dear friends. The Funeral Service for Anne was held on Saturday, May 28, 2022, at 10:30 a.m., at Watson United Church, in Watson, SK, and officiated by Rev. Brenda Curtis. Others taking part were: Betty Wittig, music ministry; David Soubolsky, scripture reader; Paula Franko, memorial table attendant. The urn bearer was Dreyden Chyz and the honorary pallbearers were: Arlene Franko, Sharon Soubolsky, Kathy Franko, Joe Pelechaty, Monica Hudson, Mary Lazurko, and Lillian Franko. The memorial luncheon was held at the Watson Royal Canadian Legion and interment took place in the Watson Public Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made in Anne’s name to the Watson Public Cemetery (PO Box 276, Watson, SK, S0K 4V0).
