Humboldt City Council has taken the first step to approve the preliminary design of a new residential development on Humbolt’s west side. Council approved the development concept on a new single dwelling residential development to the north and west of Discovery Ford.

The decision was made at the February 24th City Council meeting. The comprehensive development application (CDA) was received from engineering consultants Catterall and Wright on behalf of Westwood Development Corporation. The proposed development will cover an 83-acre parcel of land with a proposal to develop the residential neighbourhood in a five-phase package as the market demands.

The development is designed to radiate around a storm pond which provides a focal feature for the area. The endorsement of the plan in its concept phase will allow for additional studies regarding zoning and development of service agreements with the City.

Like many recent urban developments in larger cities, the plan purports to create a sense of community with “unique public spaces, artwork, water features, theming, and streetscaping.”

The plan also takes into account what has been a leaner growth rate due to economic factors in the last few years. By assessing a conservative growth factor and current housing inventory, along with a unique development proposal for the City, the developers expressed a confidence in both the need and desire for dwellings in the area.
