Humboldt Collegiate's Student Action Squad combined forces with SADD, local RCMP and emergency services on Thursday night for the SADD Red Ribbon Campaign from 6-8 pm.

RCMP officers were out in full force on Main Street in front of City Hall on Thursday, backing up the students who were handing out Red Ribbons and courtesy coffee. Officers greeted motorists at the checkstop and guided traffic to students who helped deliver their important messaging about the costs of drinking and driving.

Karysa Leicht and Danica Leonard, students at HCI, were among those spreading the message and the warm coffee.

“Our main group is called the Student Action Squad,” explained Karysa who took time away from her duties to talk. “We fundraise for things around Humboldt. We’ve fundraised to support teachers who have cancer, we’ve fundraised for many other activities.”

“We also raise awareness for mental health,” added Danica, who said that promotion of wellness is a huge part of the group’s focus.

Red Ribbon Campaigns with SADD happen year-round. SADD distributes Red Ribbons to organizations like the HCI Student Action Squad for distribution. Drivers can affix the ribbons to their cars as a constant symbol of opposition to drinking and driving. Unfortunately, impaired driving continues to cause injuries and claim lives every year.

Hats off to the students, staff, RCMP and emergency services staff for participation in this and other initiatives.
