The province’s Crown insurance company is looking to put a little cash back in the pocket of vehicle owners in Saskatchewan.

On Thursday, it was announced SGI will be issuing a $100 rebate to their customers for every vehicle registered as of this past Wednesday. The rebates will be provided for all classes of vehicles, be it private, commercial or farm. Trailers and snowmobiles will not be included as part of the rebate.

The rebates are coming from SGI’s Rate Stabilization Reserve. SGI describes it as a rainy day fund of sorts for the Auto Fund, cushioning customers from sudden increases on insurance.

"Our government is pleased to deliver this benefit back to the people of Saskatchewan," Minister Responsible for SGI Don Morgan said. "The Rate Stabilization Reserve has a surplus that was largely generated by its well-performing investment portfolio. We believe it’s fair that all Auto Fund customers benefit equally, regardless of how long their vehicle was registered or the premium they pay for that vehicle.  All drivers are facing higher fuel costs, regardless of what they’re driving."

It is expected the rebates will have a total cost of roughly $95 million. The rebates will be issued to the person or entity who is listed as the registered owner of a vehicle. If someone has multiple vehicles registered as of March 9th, they will receive a single cheque including the rebates for all the vehicles.

It is expected there will be more than 700,000 rebate cheques mailed out by SGI. The mailout will be happening at a date this spring that has yet to be determined.
