St. Patrick’s Day will soon be upon us and for those inclined to the wearing of the green, there’s a great way to celebrate in Humboldt.

The Humboldt and District SPCA is holding Shake the Shamrock on March 17 as a special St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser. It’s an evening of tasting, testing, and tantalizing treats provided by local chefs and the province’s brewers and distillers. Look forward to a night of entertainment, provided by the SPCA and its volunteers, with a whole heap of help from its friends.

“Our first annual Shake the Shamrock includes food samplers, drink samples, silent auction tables, beautiful door prizes, and then we’re going to have entertainment by The Horse’s Mouth,” says Leah Schlitz, vice-president of the Humboldt and District SPCA.

The event starts at 7:00 pm at the Humboldt Legion Hall for patrons who are 19 years of age or over. The host of refreshment providers includes Lucky Bastard Distillery, Alibi Vodka, Great Western, Phantom Distillery, and Crossmount Cider. On the food side, contributors include the Bella Vista Inn, Johnny’s Bistro and Sobeys. Schlitz says a lot of people have donated for the silent auction and are offering their help.for the event.

A $40 admission charge includes 5 sampler tickets, a chance at door prizes, 2 tickets to a Bronco playoff game, and a gold jewelry set from Diamonds of Detroit.

Perennial St. Patrick’s Day favourites, The Horse's Mouth, will dig deep into their bag of jigs and reels to provide a rollicking good time.

The fundraiser is a new venture for the SPCA which always relies on the generosity and support of people in the area to help homeless animals.

“The SPCA is always looking for new fundraising ideas and we thought this was a good one,” Schlitz says. “We have overhead for our building and kennels, and of course food, vaccinating, vet bills, transportation to and from the vets. We’re always looking for different ways for the community to be involved in the SPCA.”

There’s always a need for volunteers, she says, even if it’s just the time it takes for an extra walk for a dog or a few minutes of playtime for the cats.

Tickets for Shake the Shamrock are available at Prairie Flora Designs. Those interested in more information or seeking to volunteer with the SPCA can go to the Facebook page or contact Leah at (306) 320-7721.
