St. Peter’s College art class found out that a change of venue is good for the creative spirit as its members assembled at the Humboldt and District Gallery on Thursday, May 12. The class had an opportunity to work with live models in the Gallery’s main floor public space. Meanwhile, the works of the class adorned the walls as part of the College’s annual exhibition.

Instructor Grant McConnell knows the benefit of the Gallery visit.

“We’ve been doing this show with the Humboldt and District Museum and Gallery for about 12 years or more. It’s lovely to have the hospitality of the Gallery where they welcome us in for a studio exercise. Not only do the students experience their work up in the Gallery, but we have a chance to work in-house. The Gallery very generously provided us with two models, and we do a proper full on studio environment engagement with the models here.”

Students like Emily Friesen and Michelle Knutson were among the students working with the models. Friesen has returned to art as a study after taking some classes in school.“I’ve always liked drawing and I knew I’d learn a lot by taking the class.”

Knutson is working on expanding her repertoire after studying in high school. She talked about the angular nature of her self-portrait, a fused profile and front-facing portrait.

“I used a Picasso style because he has different angles of faces in his work.”

The College’s display will remain in the Gallery for viewing until the end of March.
