Another sure sign of spring is on the way this weekend with the Spring Concert performances by St. Peter’s Chorus. There will be two chances to catch the songfest this weekend – one on Friday, April 12 at the Philadelphia Mennonite Church northeast of Watrous on Highway 668, and one on Sunday, April 14 at St. Augustine Church in Humboldt.

There is something for everyone at this season’s welcome to spring, says musical director Maxine Moore.

“Our program this term has a wide variety of music,” says Moore. “We’ll be featuring songs of praise, some gospel favourites, and some Canadian music.”

Moore says one of the key features is a medley of Disney favourites with many tunes dating back to long time childhood memories.

“On the more serious side, we’ll be performing the prayer for Ukraine; we’ll be performing in Ukrainian. Our final song is kind of a tribute to Beethoven. It’s been 200 years since he wrote his 9th Symphony, and so we’ll be doing a movement from that - ‘Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee’”

Moore says some of the members of the Chorus will be joining others for a performance of Beethoven’s 9th with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra on May 4. That opportunity brings back memories of the entire Chorus performance of the piece with the Regina Symphony Orchestra, Moore reflects.

St. Peter’s Chorus current has 45 members representing 11 different communities. Based out of Muenster, it is the oldest continuous choir in the province.

The Friday concert at the Philadelphia Mennonite Church starts at 7:30 pm, and the performance on Sunday at the St. Augustine Church begins at 2:30 pm.
