Broncos, Terriers kick off weekend doubleheader in Humboldt
Friday night will mark the Humboldt Broncos' first bounce back game of the year when they host the Yorkton Terriers at the Elgar Petersen Arena. After opening with five straight wins to begin the 2025-26 regular season, the Broncos suffered their first loss on Monday night in Kindersley, dropping a 5-3 decision to the Klippers. Despite the setback, the green and gold remain the only team in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) with a double-digit number of points. Captain Ryder Knutson will miss the weekend set against the Terriers after receiving a two-game suspension from the league for a One-Man Major Fighting in the Last 10 Minutes of the 3rd Period. The defenceman will be eligible to return to the lineup on Tuesday night. Humboldt has received an influx of players from the Western Hockey League (WHL) in the early stages of the regular season and that trend continued Thursday with two more additions. Forward Owen Chapman joins the Broncos have beginning the 2025-26 campaign in Portland with the WHL’s Winterhawks. The former Saskatoon Contact is no stranger to Humboldt after playing six regular season games last year in Humboldt and four playoff games. The Broncos also received a boost on their blueline as Tyrone Sobry was reassigned to Humboldt. Sobry spent the last two seasons with Prince Albert after being selected by the Broncos in the second round (21st overall) of the 2022 SJHL Draft. The 6’2 192 lb defenceman played in 47 games with Prince Albert during the 2024-25 campaign collecting 7 points (2G-5A). Humboldt’s penalty kill has been near perfect so far in the regular season, only allowing one goal on 30 attempts (96.7%). Tonight’s contest will mark the first matchup between the Broncos and Terriers. Yorkton along with La Ronge are the two SJHL clubs who have yet to earn a victory. The Terriers' last game was on Tuesday night in Estevan with the Bruins picking up a 6-3 win. Gabrielle Courchesne currently leads the Terriers in scoring with 5 points (3G-2A) in three games. Humboldt has dominated the recent matchups with Yorkton with a 13-2-0-1 record over the five seasons, including a 6-1-0-1 record on home ice. This evening will also mark the first appearance of the Broncos' new third jersey. Yesterday, the team offered a glimpse of the new threads on their social media channels, showcasing a new sharp dark jersey with traditional green and gold trimmings and the familiar Broncos logo. Also, the jerseys will have EP shoulder patches recognizing Elgar Petersen. Coverage for tonight’s game on 107.5 Bolt FM and at discoverhumboldt.com begins at 7:15, the puck drops at 7:30.
