Humboldt product and 2003 RBC Cup champion with the Broncos, Orrin Hergott is back in the game, this time coaching.

The 34 year-old has rejoined the Columbus Cottonmouths as an assistant coach in the Southern Professional Hockey League.

He spent nine years with the team following his junior career, he still calls the Georgia community on Hamilton home.

"I got a phone call from Jerome Bechard, the Head Coach one day kind of asking, hinting around seeing if maybe I wanted to get involved and come on board," Hergott explained last week.

"Kind of talked about it for a couple weeks and it just kind of came about, I'm pretty excited about the opportunity."

He has been involved in the coaching game, up until January 25th's announcement by the team Hergott had been helping with the club team at Auburn University.

Thankfully he hadn't yet joined the Cottonmouths when the team's bus crashed on their way to a game in Peoria, Illinois on January 19th. Despite not actually being involved the scene still hit home for Hergott.

"It's one of those rare things that happens, you think about all the times you rode the bus, especially those sleeper buses. You are tucked away in your bunk not really thinking about anything just trying to get some sleep and relax and then all of a sudden you you hear something like this. So yeah, definitely scary."

Hergott played in 404 games for the Cottonmouths, that's the most games ever played for one franchise in league history. He compiled 241 career points and celebrated SPHL championships in 2005 and 2012.

His number 11 is also retired by the team.
