On Wednesday, February 16, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and Alberta Premier Jason Kenney joined forces with 16 United States Governors to call upon the Prime Minister and the President of the United States to immediately reinstate the vaccine and quarantine exemptions for truckers.

A letter was sent Wednesday morning, stating, "We are writing to request that you immediately reinstate the vaccine and quarantine exemptions available to cross-border truck drivers. We understand the vital importance of vaccines in the fight against COVID-19 and continue to encourage eligible individuals to get vaccinated."

The letter stated they are deeply concerned that terminating the exemptions has had negative impacts on the North American supply chain, affecting the cost of living, and access to essential products for people in both countries.

The letter was signed by 16 governors from states such as Alabama, Idaho, Iowa, North Dakota, and Utah.

Premier Moe stated in a tweet, “With North America facing supply chain constraints, these measures are ultimately unnecessary and will place significant pressure on Canadian and American families.”

Premier Kenney stated in a post that he got the ball rolling for this letter during a trip to the National Governors Association meeting in Washington in late January.

Kenney agreed with Moe in a post, stating, “The trucker vax mandate has no credible public health benefit, but has caused predictable disruption.”

The letter states that the timing of the decision to terminate the vaccine and quarantine exemptions could not have come at a worse time, as North America already faces supply chain constraints.

The signed letter also stated, “Transportation associations have informed us that the lack of exemptions will force thousands of drivers out of the trucking industry, which is already facing a significant workforce shortage.”

Kenney stated in a post that he expects more signatures in the days to come.
