Santa's reindeer got into a bit of a scuffle on Wednesday.

Around Noon on December 2, drivers on Highway 5 may have noticed two mule deer lock horns while passing by Brockman Enterprises in Humboldt. One passer-by, Danielle DeMong, managed to catch the duel on camera, which can be viewed in the video above.

Seeing a fight such as this is a rare sight, especially within city limits. Saskatchewan's Ministry of Environment states the altercation was a result of fighting over a mate.

"In this case, it was a full out battle, which only occurs when the bucks are of equal size. It's to determine who is the most dominant and is allowed to spread their genetics," said Brendon Smith, a Conservation Officer out of Humboldt.

This time of year is known as rutting season for deer throughout Saskatchewan. Rutting season is when the movement of all wildlife, including deer, increases for the purpose of breeding, finding food, and searching for suitable habitats.

"While searching for all of these needs, deer will occasionally enter into towns and cities, like Humboldt," stated Smith.

When encountering a fight like this, observers are reminded to keep their distance and let the deer battle it out on their own. However, if at any point the antlers get locked together and can't be separated, the public should contact conservation officers. The best method to do so is to go through the Sasktip line at 1-800-667-7561.
