Ball season is just around the corner, and Baseball Sask is hoping to recruit fresh faced for Level 1 and 2 umpires. A local umpires clinic is scheduled for Saturday, April 20.

This year, there are two components to the umpire training. First there is an online training opportunity to offer flexibility and convenience for participants. The online session covers the groundwork for becoming an umpire.

Then there is a series of on-field clinics happening throughout the province. The 4-hour on-field training allows for a hands-on approach and aims to better prepare umpires for real game scenarios.

The Level 2 clinic takes place at 8:30 am at the Muenster School with on field components weather permitting. The Level 1 Clinic is a go at 1 pm.

“We have an experience umpire coming out from Saskatoon to run the clinics,” says coordinator Curtis Strueby. “The online portion is to be done prior to the on-field session.”

Strueby says the online component should take about 2 hours of time.

“It’s simple – if you don’t have umpires, you can’t play the game,” says Strueby. “We have a lot of baseball in the region, and we do a lot of hosting. If we can get kids into umpiring at a younger age, I think it gives them an appreciation of the job umpires do when the kids are playing the game. It gives them a different perspective to the game.”
