After an incident in Saskatoon which saw 29 people evacuated from a building due to carbon monoxide, a reminder from SaskEnergy, SaskPower and the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency on the dangers of carbon monoxide, and what people can do to prevent CO poisoning.

Carbon monoxide is colourless, tasteless and odourless, and can be extremely dangerous with deadly effects. Low exposure can result in flu-like symptoms. Continued exposures to high levels can lead to unconsciousness, convulsions, brain damage and death.

The agencies are recommending residents have fuel-burning appliances inspected by a licensed contractor every year. As well, conduct regular inspections of chimneys and vents to make sure they are clear of debris or ice and snow buildup in the winter.

Carbon monoxide detectors are also recommended to alert residents of the danger of CO in the home before physical symptoms appear.

SaskEnergy has partnered with retails across the province to offer a $10 point of sale rebate on the purchase of CO alarms. The rebate came into effect in November and expires on January 31st.
